Choosing a Toothbrush That's Right For You

The rest of us, on the other hand, are content with the fallacy that a toothbrush is a toothbrush - as long as it prevents bad breath - and as a result we tend to get the cheaper ones. Neither of these can be considered a safe gamble, simply because people generally have different problems with their mouths.

Oral health care is more than just removing cavities and making sure you have fresh breath every day. It's about maintaining healthy gums and ensuring that there's no food stuck in the unreachable spaces between your teeth. Another thing to consider when you're buying a toothbrush is the type of teeth/gums you have, because there are different types of toothbrushes.

A healthy mouth is a healthy smile

Good oral care is the key to healthy gums, strong white teeth and ultimately oral hygiene. Below are the different kinds of toothbrushes that are available:

Manual toothbrush - This is the oldest type of toothbrush. They were originally designed as just a strong base with bristles on the one end. As the world evolved, the designers started creating different textures and sizes of bristles. This was to cater to the various kinds of teeth that people have. The major plus for this kind of brush, is that it's very comfortable to handle. The latest designs of the manual toothbrush even have tongue scrapers, allowing a more thorough scrub of the tongue and the cheeks leaving your mouth feeling fresh all around.Battery powered toothbrush - This design is very similar to the manual toothbrush. The only difference is that it has a thicker base (which obviously has to keep the batteries inside). In terms of functionality, however, the battery powered toothbrush bristles can clean much more effectively. Although the base's thickness makes it less comfortable to hold, the motion of the bristles allow it reach in the spaces that a manual toothbrush can't reach. Some of these toothbrushes have bristles that move in a circular motion, they're more gentle on the gums and thorough on the teeth.Sonic powered toothbrush - These toothbrushes use sonic power to clean teeth. The bristles move with an extreme vibration, shaking loose all hidden plaque, bits of food and debris from between the teeth. It has a very comfortable grip because it doesn't need a thick base to store batteries in. You actually have to plug into the wall in order to get it going.Chewable toothbrush - This tooth cleaner was designed to be used in places where water, toothbrushes and toothpaste are not accessible. It should never be used as a substitute for normal daily brushing.

Getting a toothbrush that suits your mouth is very important. The manual toothbrush is the one that has different textures (hard, medium, soft), while the battery and the sonic powered toothbrushes rely on different vibration speed. So basically, whether you have strong or sensitive gums and teeth, you can find a toothbrush that was designed for you.
