It is the best solution for replacing the missing tooth. Made up of two crowns called abutment teeth and a false tooth called pontics (between the anchoring teeth), these brides are made of alloy, gold, porcelain or combination of these materials.
Basically there are three main types of bridges:
Traditional fixed: This type comprise of two crowns and a filler tooth. As the name suggests, it was traditionally used because the material used to make these bridges were either of porcelain fused to metal or ceramics. The filler in this type of bridge was used attach one or more than one crowns.Cantilever: If you don't have teeth next to other side of the teeth. This type of bridge is the most appropriate to cover one side of the lost teeth.Maryland bonded bridges: Also called as resin-bonded or Maryland bridge. This type of bridge is made of metal framework and is used to support the front teeth (the existing tooth is bonded with bridge that has metal wings on each of its side). However, making choice from the aforementioned bridges, dentist needs to have consultation with the patient. After determining his needs and budget, he will appropriately tell the patient which one bridge would be best for him.
During the first visit, an abutment tooth is prepared by removing the portion of enamel and dentin. This will help in making the tooth prepared for placing the crown over it. But the crown placed during this visit is temporary till the time permanent one is not made.
Once permanent bridge is prepared, patient will be called soon for the second visit. During the second visit, temporary bridge will be removed and permanent one will be placed with the cemented material.
However, multiple visits may be needed, if the metal framework is not fitted properly or forces in the bite are not appropriate.
